Single figure nudes

February til end of May 2016

Single figure nudes constitute an important segment of Norman's pencil work. He accumulated hundreds of pencil studies covering the muscular configuration of the nude from all angles. Usually drawn for reference, his single nudes ‘float' on the page. They do not sit on chairs, lie on couches or lean on columns. Most of the figures are lightning sketches; sometimes Norman would draw the same model in four or five different positions until he found the one he wanted. Then it might be the inspiration for a more detailed oil painting. This new exhibition ‘This Shrine -A celebration of the single nude in Norman Lindsay’s art’ includes a number of privately owned Norman Lindsay pencil studies, and contrasts them with etchings and oils drawn from the National Trust Collection and is on display until May 2016
